Performance outcomes

By the end, you can:

  1. 1Inspect the opening and unit before installation.
  2. 2Set hinge jamb plumb and control reveals.
  3. 3Perform a functional closeout check.

Working vocabulary

Name it precisely.

Jamb
The frame surface forming the sides and head of a door opening.
Hinge leaf
One flat plate of a hinge attached to the door or jamb.
Strike
The frame-side hardware receiving the latch.
Shim
A tapered or uniform spacer used to position and support an assembly.

01 · Instruction

Qualify the opening and unit

Confirm handing, swing, opening size, floor condition and unit condition. Dry-fit if needed and identify where the opening is tight, out of plumb or out of plane.

02 · Instruction

Control from the hinge jamb

Set the hinge side plumb and supported at hinge locations, then establish the head and strike-side reveals. Fastening should secure position without bowing the jamb. Follow the door manufacturer’s instructions.

Execution checklist

  • Hinge jamb plumb
  • Head reveal consistent
  • Strike reveal consistent
  • Jamb faces align with finish plane

03 · Instruction

Test the whole operating cycle

Open to multiple positions, close gently, confirm latch engagement and check that the slab does not drift because of jamb error. Recheck after casing fasteners.

Field assignment

Door installation record

Install or mock up a prehung door and record reveal and operating checks.

Evidence to capture

  • Opening measurements
  • Shim and fastener map
  • Reveal measurements
  • Function checklist

Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.

Tool loadout

Tools earn their place by the operation.

Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.

Mastery check

Prove you can make the call.

Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.

1. Which jamb is normally established first?
2. What can excessive fastener force do?
3. Why test the door before casing?
