How battery platforms actually work

A "battery platform" is a shared physical and electrical connector. Every tool and every pack in the same platform — Milwaukee M18, DeWalt 20V MAX, etc. — speaks the same language. Mix platforms and nothing plugs in.

The FlexVolt exception: DeWalt's FlexVolt packs auto-switch between 20V and 60V depending on the tool they're clicked into. That means one 9.0Ah FlexVolt pack powers your 20V MAX impact driver and your 60V FlexVolt table saw. Milwaukee has no equivalent.

Why it matters at checkout: picking a tool on a platform you don't already own means buying batteries too. A Milwaukee M18 HD12.0 pack is ~$219 retail. Add a charger and you're at $280+ before you've drilled a hole. Before you switch, know what you're about to spend.
