Performance outcomes
By the end, you can:
- 1Mark a repeatable casing reveal.
- 2Choose between mitered and square-joint assemblies.
- 3Preassemble where it improves joint control.
Working vocabulary
Name it precisely.
- Miter
- An angled joint, commonly joining trim around a corner.
- Horn
- An intentional extension of a trim member beyond an intersection.
- Back bevel
- A slight relief cut behind a visible edge to improve fit.
- Preassembly
- Joining components before placing the assembly on the wall or opening.
01 · Instruction
Lay out the visual frame
Mark the same reveal from the jamb around the opening using a gauge or combination square. Resolve stool, plinth, head and side relationships before cutting expensive stock.
02 · Instruction
Cut from verified references
Use test pieces to confirm saw angle and fence condition. Reference cuts from the same material edge, label every part and leave controlled fitting allowance where the wall is irregular.
03 · Instruction
Control the joint before fastening the field
When practical, preassemble critical miters on a flat surface, then fit the assembly to the opening. Fasten progressively while watching reveals and joint closure.
Concept diagram—not a construction drawing. Dimensions, connections and approvals come from the project documents and local authority.
Field assignment
Cased opening mock-up
Case one side of an opening or build a full-scale corner mock-up.
Evidence to capture
- Reveal gauge shown
- Cut list
- Joint close-up
- Final reveal measurements
Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.
Tool loadout
Tools earn their place by the operation.
Eye and hearing protection →
Baseline PPE for cutting and fastening operations.
Tape, square and marking tools →
Establish, transfer and verify dimensions before cutting.
Miter saw →
Make repeatable trim crosscuts and miters after calibration.
Brad or finish nailer →
Place controlled finish fasteners with required PPE and work practices.
Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.
Mastery check
Prove you can make the call.
Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.
