Performance outcomes

By the end, you can:

  1. 1Lay out joists from a documented origin.
  2. 2Install connectors as complete systems.
  3. 3Correct crowns and plane variation before decking.

Working vocabulary

Name it precisely.

Joist hanger
A connector supporting a joist where direct bearing is not provided.
Rim joist
A member closing and restraining joist ends at the perimeter.
Bridging/blocking
Intermediate restraint helping distribute load or prevent member rotation where required.
Plane
A flat reference surface across multiple installed members.

01 · Instruction

Lay out for structure and finish

Start from the approved origin and coordinate joist positions with picture framing, board direction, railing posts and stair openings. Resolve narrow edge boards on paper.

02 · Instruction

Install the connector system

Use the connector model and fasteners specified by the design and manufacturer. Seat members fully, fill required holes and avoid unapproved substitutions or field modifications.

03 · Instruction

Correct the plane now

Orient crowns consistently, check the tops with a line or laser and correct approved minor variation before decking. Verify blocking, rim restraint and openings before access becomes limited.

Field assignment

Joist-bay mock-up

Build a supervised joist bay with rim, blocking and a specified hanger.

Evidence to capture

  • Layout origin
  • Connector label and fasteners
  • Plane check
  • Final fastening inspection

Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.

Tool loadout

Tools earn their place by the operation.

Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.

Mastery check

Prove you can make the call.

Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.

1. What should be coordinated during joist layout?
2. May any fastener that fits a connector hole be used?
3. When should joist-plane variation be addressed?
