Performance outcomes

By the end, you can:

  1. 1Create a board-layout plan.
  2. 2Maintain straight control lines across the field.
  3. 3Apply product-specific spacing and fastening requirements.

Working vocabulary

Name it precisely.

Picture frame
A perimeter board pattern framing the main decking field.
Breaker board
A board used to interrupt long runs or manage butt joints.
Field board
A repeated board within the main deck surface.
Gapping
Planned space between boards for drainage, movement or fastening systems.

01 · Instruction

Solve the pattern before the first board

Measure the actual frame, account for borders and gaps, then distribute any adjustment across the field. Avoid ending with a narrow ripped board at the building or outer edge.

02 · Instruction

Work from control lines

Set and recheck straight lines at intervals rather than trusting each previous board. Small gap errors accumulate across a wide deck.

Execution checklist

  • Reference edge verified
  • Board direction confirmed
  • Fastener lines marked
  • Drainage paths remain open

03 · Instruction

Follow the product

Wood species, moisture condition, composite profile and hidden-fastener systems have different requirements. Use current manufacturer instructions for gaps, overhangs, edge distance and fastening.

Field assignment

Decking control strip

Install or mock up a five-board field with a border or breaker detail.

Evidence to capture

  • Board-layout calculation
  • Control-line checks
  • Gap record
  • Fastener alignment photo

Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.

Tool loadout

Tools earn their place by the operation.

Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.

Mastery check

Prove you can make the call.

Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.

1. Why calculate the board field before installation?
2. Why reset control lines during installation?
3. What governs composite-deck spacing?
