Performance outcomes

By the end, you can:

  1. 1Transfer a support grid from control lines.
  2. 2Verify footing and post conditions against approved documents.
  3. 3Inspect beam bearing and built-up member fastening.

Working vocabulary

Name it precisely.

Tributary area
The portion of a surface whose load is carried by a particular member or support.
Footing
A foundation element spreading structural load to soil.
Post base
A connector restraining and separating a post at its support as designed.
Built-up beam
A beam assembled from multiple plies connected to act together.

01 · Instruction

Control the grid

Establish building and deck baselines, locate support centerlines and verify diagonals. Protect layout references from excavation so the same grid can check installed posts.

02 · Instruction

Inspect what will be buried

Confirm location, excavation condition, required depth and size, reinforcement where applicable, and utility clearance before placement. Use the approved inspection process.

03 · Instruction

Set a reliable beam plane

Verify post plumb, base and cap installation, beam bearing, ply orientation and specified fastening. Record top-of-beam elevations before joists spread the error across the deck.

Field assignment

Support-grid verification

Lay out a scaled support grid and complete an inspection form for a sample footing, post and beam.

Evidence to capture

  • Baseline and diagonal measurements
  • Support centerlines
  • Connector schedule
  • Top-of-beam elevation record

Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.

Tool loadout

Tools earn their place by the operation.

Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.

Mastery check

Prove you can make the call.

Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.

1. Why preserve layout baselines through excavation?
2. When should buried work be inspected?
3. Why record beam elevations?
