Performance outcomes
By the end, you can:
- 1Write a deck performance brief.
- 2Explain why a ledger is a high-consequence connection.
- 3Identify information required for permit or design review.
Working vocabulary
Name it precisely.
- Ledger
- A horizontal member connecting an attached deck to the primary structure.
- Freestanding deck
- A deck supported independently rather than relying on a building ledger connection.
- Lateral load
- Force acting horizontally on a structure.
- Flashing
- A water-management layer protecting vulnerable transitions and directing water outward.
01 · Instruction
Start with use and consequence
Occupancy, elevation, stairs, guards, hot tubs, roof loads and access change the design problem. Record these before selecting spans or member sizes.
02 · Instruction
Treat the ledger as a system
An attached deck depends on verified existing construction, structural fasteners, load transfer and continuous water management. Veneers, cantilevers and inaccessible framing can make a prescriptive ledger inappropriate.
03 · Instruction
Prepare the review packet
Show site location, dimensions, elevation, support grid, stairs, guards, material species and grade, connection strategy and known utilities. Mark every assumption requiring field verification.
Concept diagram—not a construction drawing. Dimensions, connections and approvals come from the project documents and local authority.
Field assignment
Deck basis-of-design sheet
Prepare a one-page concept comparing attached and freestanding approaches for a sample site.
Evidence to capture
- Use and geometry
- Existing-wall investigation questions
- Water-path sketch
- Approval and design questions
Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.
Tool loadout
Tools earn their place by the operation.
Eye and hearing protection →
Baseline PPE for cutting and fastening operations.
Tape, square and marking tools →
Establish, transfer and verify dimensions before cutting.
Inspection camera →
Support—not replace—verification of concealed existing conditions.
Laser level →
Map elevations and door clearances.
Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.
Mastery check
Prove you can make the call.
Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.
