Shed Capstone

CT-SH-201 · Lesson 1 of 6 · Capstone

Scope the shed, site and approvals

Define a buildable accessory structure by resolving use, size, setbacks, utilities, wind, snow, drainage and access before buying material.

Performance outcomes

By the end, you can:

  1. 1Create a site constraints map.
  2. 2Write a shed performance brief.
  3. 3Identify approvals that must precede construction.

Working vocabulary

Name it precisely.

Setback
Required separation from a property line or other regulated feature.
Easement
A legal right allowing another party to use part of a property for a stated purpose.
Frost depth
Local depth used to address soil freezing effects on foundations.
Drainage plane
A continuous path that directs water down and out of an enclosure.

01 · Instruction

Write the performance brief

Name the intended storage, interior clearance, door size, floor loading, electrical expectations, exterior finish and service life. These decisions control structure, access and cost.

Execution checklist

  • Use and occupant access
  • Overall dimensions and height
  • Door and window schedule
  • Durability and finish target

02 · Instruction

Map the site

Confirm property information through appropriate records and local processes. Locate utilities through the required notification service, observe drainage and measure access for material and equipment.

03 · Instruction

Freeze the basis of design

Record the governing drawing, assumptions, product selections and unresolved approvals in a one-page basis-of-design sheet. Changes after foundation work should be treated as design changes, not field improvisation.

Concept diagram—not a construction drawing. Dimensions, connections and approvals come from the project documents and local authority.

Field assignment

Site and scope packet

Prepare a dimensioned site sketch and one-page performance brief for a hypothetical or real shed location.

Evidence to capture

  • Site dimensions and north arrow
  • Setback and utility questions
  • Drainage observations
  • Approval checklist

Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.

Tool loadout

Tools earn their place by the operation.

Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.

Mastery check

Prove you can make the call.

Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.

1. What should happen before material procurement?
2. Why write the shed use explicitly?
3. Which is a design change?
