Performance outcomes

By the end, you can:

  1. 1Compare approved foundation strategies.
  2. 2Lay out and square a floor frame.
  3. 3Verify bearing, anchorage and moisture separation.

Working vocabulary

Name it precisely.

Bearing
The supported contact area through which a member transfers load.
Skid
A durable longitudinal member used in some shed foundation systems.
Ground contact
A material exposure requiring products rated for direct or severe moisture contact.
Subfloor
Structural sheet or board material attached over the floor framing.

01 · Instruction

Choose the system from site conditions

Gravel-supported skids, piers, slabs and frost-depth foundations solve different problems. Use the approved design and local requirements for soil, uplift, frost and building size rather than copying a detail from another climate.

02 · Instruction

Establish level and square

Build from fixed control lines. Verify support elevations, frame dimensions and diagonals before installing the subfloor. Shim only with approved durable materials and details.

Execution checklist

  • Support locations match the drawing.
  • Bearing is continuous where required.
  • Diagonals agree within the project tolerance.
  • Anchorage is installed and documented.

03 · Instruction

Protect the assembly from water

Slope surrounding grade away where required, keep drainage paths open and use specified separation between wood and concrete or soil. Install subfloor panels with the orientation, gap and fastener schedule required by the approved documents and panel manufacturer.

Field assignment

Floor platform quality record

Lay out a scaled mock-up or supervised floor frame and complete a pre-subfloor inspection.

Evidence to capture

  • Support elevation log
  • Frame dimension and diagonal record
  • Anchorage photos
  • Subfloor layout sketch

Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.

Tool loadout

Tools earn their place by the operation.

Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.

Mastery check

Prove you can make the call.

Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.

1. What determines the appropriate shed foundation?
2. When should floor-frame diagonals be checked?
3. What is the goal of moisture separation?
