Performance outcomes
By the end, you can:
- 1Establish cabinet elevation and stud references.
- 2Join and secure cases without distortion.
- 3Run a functional and visual closeout.
Working vocabulary
Name it precisely.
- Casework
- Box-like built components such as cabinets, shelving and built-ins.
- Filler
- A fitted piece closing intentional space between a cabinet and adjacent surface.
- Scribe strip
- Material shaped to match an irregular wall or ceiling edge.
- Face alignment
- The controlled relationship between adjacent cabinet frames, doors or finished fronts.
01 · Instruction
Establish support and services
Confirm wall construction, backing, utilities, finished-floor high points and manufacturer requirements. Mark level reference lines and verified fastener locations before lifting cases.
02 · Instruction
Set the assembly, not isolated boxes
Start from the governing elevation and reference end. Shim at structural points, align faces, clamp and join cases according to the system, then secure to verified structure without racking the boxes.
03 · Instruction
Close function and finish
Adjust doors and drawers only after the cases are stable. Check reveals, hardware, scribe fit, anchorage, surface damage and operation under realistic loading.
Execution checklist
- ✓Reference elevation maintained
- ✓Cases level and plumb
- ✓Fasteners into verified support
- ✓Faces and reveals aligned
- ✓Doors and drawers operate cleanly
Concept diagram—not a construction drawing. Dimensions, connections and approvals come from the project documents and local authority.
Field assignment
Two-case installation
Install or mock up two adjacent cabinets with a filler or scribe condition.
Evidence to capture
- Reference-line map
- Support and fastener record
- Face-alignment measurements
- Functional punch list
Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.
Tool loadout
Tools earn their place by the operation.
Eye and hearing protection →
Baseline PPE for cutting and fastening operations.
Tape, square and marking tools →
Establish, transfer and verify dimensions before cutting.
Laser level →
Maintain cabinet elevation and alignment.
Drill/driver and impact driver →
Pre-drill, join cases and secure approved fasteners without stripping.
Track or circular saw →
Cut fillers, panels and scribes with proper support.
Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.
Mastery check
Prove you can make the call.
Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.
