Performance outcomes
By the end, you can:
- 1Run a systems-based punch inspection.
- 2Document deviations and corrective work.
- 3Assemble an owner handoff record.
Working vocabulary
Name it precisely.
- Punch list
- A controlled list of incomplete, damaged or nonconforming work requiring resolution.
- Substantial completion
- A project state sufficiently complete for intended use, subject to defined remaining work.
- Closeout
- The records, inspections, corrections and turnover activities that formally complete the work.
- As-built record
- A record of installed conditions and approved deviations from the original plan.
01 · Instruction
Inspect by system
Review site drainage, foundation, floor, wall geometry, roof, cladding, openings, hardware and finishes in a fixed sequence. System-based inspection is more reliable than walking around looking for whatever catches the eye.
02 · Instruction
Close every issue visibly
Assign each punch item an owner, due date, disposition and evidence. Do not erase an issue from the list because someone says it was handled; attach a verification photo or measurement.
Execution checklist
- ✓Life-safety and weather issues first
- ✓No concealed unresolved deviation
- ✓Hardware operates through full range
- ✓Debris and sharp hazards removed
03 · Instruction
Deliver the record
Provide approvals, product instructions, finish information, warranty or purchase records, maintenance intervals, concealed-condition photographs and any as-built deviations. A clean handoff turns workmanship into durable value.
Concept diagram—not a construction drawing. Dimensions, connections and approvals come from the project documents and local authority.
Field assignment
Capstone closeout packet
Perform and document the final capstone inspection.
Evidence to capture
- System-based checklist
- Closed punch list
- As-built notes
- Owner maintenance sheet
Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.
Tool loadout
Tools earn their place by the operation.
Eye and hearing protection →
Baseline PPE for cutting and fastening operations.
Tape, square and marking tools →
Establish, transfer and verify dimensions before cutting.
Inspection light →
Expose finish, flashing and hardware issues.
Impact driver →
Make controlled final hardware adjustments without overdriving.
Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.
Mastery check
Prove you can make the call.
Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.
