Performance outcomes

By the end, you can:

  1. 1Separate product rough-opening requirements from structural sizing.
  2. 2Lay out king, jack, sill and cripple members.
  3. 3Create a verification record before sheathing.

Working vocabulary

Name it precisely.

Rough opening
The framed opening sized to receive a specific door, window or other assembly.
King stud
A full-height stud beside an opening that helps connect the opening assembly to the wall.
Jack stud
A shorter stud supporting the end of a header where required by the design.
Header
A member or assembly spanning an opening and transferring load to supports where required.

01 · Instruction

Separate two different decisions

The product manufacturer establishes the opening needed to install its unit; the approved structural design or adopted code establishes whether a header is required and how it is sized and supported. Never infer structural sizing from the window label.

02 · Instruction

Lay out from the opening

Establish opening edges and centerline first, then work outward through trimmers, king studs and common layout. Confirm sill height from the controlling finished-floor datum rather than from an uneven platform.

Execution checklist

  • Record unit model and manufacturer rough opening.
  • Confirm finished-floor reference.
  • Verify header and support detail from approved documents.

03 · Instruction

Measure the installed result

Check width at top, middle and bottom; height at both jambs; diagonal agreement; sill level; jamb plumb; and header bearing. Record deviations before sheathing or flashing makes correction expensive.

Field assignment

Window opening mock-up

Frame a practice opening from a supplied window rough-opening requirement and a supplied header detail.

Evidence to capture

  • Opening schedule
  • Member labels
  • Six-point measurement record
  • Photo showing support and fastening

Supervision rule: use qualified supervision whenever the assignment involves unfamiliar tools, energized equipment, structural work, excavation, work at height, or any condition outside your demonstrated competence.

Tool loadout

Tools earn their place by the operation.

Tool links are a shopping convenience, not a requirement to buy. Equivalent equipment may be appropriate when it matches the operation, material, accessory, capacity, guard, and manufacturer instructions.

Mastery check

Prove you can make the call.

Answer all three questions. The passing standard is 80%, so this short check requires 3 of 3. Explanations appear after submission.

1. Who normally establishes a window product’s rough-opening requirement?
2. What establishes structural header sizing?
3. Which measurement set best checks a framed opening?
